DESCRIPTION:Artist Selfies: Portraits From Paris \nCelebrities\, influencers\, and social media enthusiasts use selfies daily and have mastered “the pose” for their postings. But they have certainly not invented the Selfie.  \nThis presentation looks at self-portraits created by artists working in France.  Vincent van Gogh used his face as a free model to try out painting styles. Artists as different as Elisabeth-Louise Vigée and Gustave Courbet who both painted themselves with their palette and brushes. Others examine themselves in more unusual ways. \nPresenter Wendy Evans is an art historian with advanced degrees from Oxford University\, England and Wayne State University\, Detroit. She taught art history at Wayne\, the Detroit Institute of Arts\, and gives a monthly art history course on Zoom. She loves to share her passion for art. Gréville)  \nKnown as the “Black Venus” during the zenith of her popularity in the 1920s and 30s\, singer\, dancer\, and actor Josephine Baker was the first black woman to become an international film star\, and a legendary icon of beauty and rare courage. Baker achieved her success far from Hollywood; she moved to paris and appeared in silent movies there. After the introduction of sound\, she starred in singing roles for French musicals including Zou-Zou (1934) and Princess Tam Tam. \n  \nJoin other members of AFGP at the DIA Film Theatre and watch the film as a group. Members might want to grab dinner together afterwards at one of the many restaurants in the area (self planned).

When you RSVP\, please indicate what small dish you’d like to bring to share. You should also bring your own beverage (wine and beer are permitted). We’ll supply the cups/plates etc. \nThe park is open only to residents of Grosse Pointe Park and their guests\, so you MUST RSVP if you’re not a resident of GPP in order to be admitted!
